Whole-grain wheat flour—from our own clay soil
A group of Dutch wheat farmers thought it was strange to have grain shipped in from far away. They believed there was a better way: closer, fairer, and more local. With their knowledge of wheat and the fertile clay soil as a solid foundation, they set to work.
Their dedication and innovation now ensure that we can offer Dutch wheat. Good news for anyone who wants to bake locally and fairly.
Whole-grain wheat with a smaller carbon footprint
Since this grain doesn’t have to come from distant foreign countries, you shorten the supply chain. That means less transportation, a smaller carbon footprint, and a fairer price for the farmer.
The growers are also strongly committed to nature and biodiversity: flower-filled field edges for insects and birds, clover for healthy soil, and as little pesticide use as possible.
Rich in minerals from the fertile clay soil
The fertile clay soil in the Dutch polders is rich in minerals. This makes the grain more nutritious—and therefore the bread you bake with it as well. This whole-wheat flour is packed with fiber and plant-based proteins and is free of harmful pesticides. It gives your bread a rich, authentic flavor.
What can you use this whole-wheat flour for?
Ideal for nutritious breads, sourdough bread, or artisanal baked goods.
Thanks to its higher protein content, you’ll achieve a beautifully light and airy result with a firm crust and rich flavor.
Working Toward a Richer Natural Environment
The farmers who grow this grain look beyond just the harvest. They actively help build a healthier ecosystem around their fields. By sowing flower-rich field edges, they attract insects and birds that naturally protect the crops. Sowing wheat more widely also leaves room for ground beetles, which control pest insects and thus reduce the need for pesticides.
In addition, shrubs along the fields promote even greater biodiversity, while clover growing among the wheat nourishes the soil and keeps it healthy. This creates a cycle in which nature itself plays a role.
Moreover, wheat is naturally a cover crop: it gives the soil a chance to recover and become stronger. By incorporating grain into the crop rotation, the soil remains fertile and healthy. This makes wheat important not only for baking enthusiasts but also for the future of Dutch farmland.
In this way, these farmers also take on a social role: they demonstrate that it is indeed possible to combine a short supply chain with respect for nature and future-proof agriculture.
