Japanese Seaweed

Arame is a Japanese seaweed with a mild, slightly salty, and umami-rich flavor. It has a much more subtle ocean flavor than kombu, for example, making it a great place to start if you want to try seaweed.

After harvesting, the seaweed is washed in cold water, steamed, cut, and dried. This results in fine, dried pieces of arame that can be used either crispy or rehydrated.

Mild in flavor, versatile in use

Arame is delicious as a crunchy topping on a poké bowl, noodles, or miso soup. You can also soak it in cold water for about 15 minutes and then incorporate it into hot dishes, such as stir-fries or dishes where it can cook along with the other ingredients for a short while.

This makes it easy to add a seaweed touch to both Asian and everyday dishes.

Naturally rich in fiber

Arame naturally contains 16% fiber and is also a source of various minerals. As with other seaweeds, the iodine content of arame can be significant. If you consume little iodized salt or fish, you may want to take this into account when choosing and determining the amount of seaweed you eat.

Because the iodine content of seaweed can vary, it’s wise to follow the recommended serving size on the package.

How to Use Arame

  • Crispy: Sprinkle dried arame directly over poké bowls, noodles, or miso soup.

  • Soaked: Soak in cold water for about 15 minutes, drain, and use in hot dishes.

  • Cooked: Add soaked arame to stir-fries or other dishes that require further cooking.

Ingredients

100% arame, with no additives.
